Strawberry Puppy Chow

Is it just me or what?

But since when did “Puppy Chow” or in other parts of the United States “Muddy Buddies” become such a hot ticket item to make? I haven’t been living under a rock. I have been spending an awful lot of time indoors lately so maybe the lack of fresh air is getting to me.

I came across these “Sweetheart Buddies” over at The Recipe Critic and loved them.  Then I looked around and saw that almost everyone was making some sort of version of it.

So what do I do?  I jump on that bandwagon because I don’t want to be left out.

Now The Recipe Critic added M&Ms and so did I because I just can’t pass up one of those cute little chocolate morsels.  I’d add M&Ms to almost anything if I could. But I saw a recipe with red hots somewhere, some confetti sprinkles somewhere else, another place had candy corn added, and another added pretzels.

So don’t let your lack of imagination stop you from making these.  Do a Google or Bing search for “puppy chow” or “muddy buddies” and you will have more ideas for flavor combinations than you ever thought was possible.

*** BTW – this would make one darn cute Valentine’s Day snack for those you love.

Strawberry Puppy Chow

Yield: 10 - 1/2 cup servings

Prep Time: 10 min

Total Time:

Ingredients:

6 ounces white candy coating – I used CandiQuik
6 ounces red candy coating – I used Wilton
1 teaspoon of paramount crystals (or shortening or canola oil)
5 cups chex cereal
1 cup strawberry cake mix (1 cake mix has about 3 cups mix)
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 – 2 cups seasonal M&M’s

Directions:

  1. In 2 large zip lock bags, put ½ cup strawberry cake mix and ¼ cup powdered sugar into each.
  2. Next divide cereal into two bowls. 2 ½ cups cereal in each.
  3. In microwave safe dish, melt the 6 ounces of white candy coating.  Add 1/2 teaspoon of paramount crystals or shortening so that the candy coating will spread more evenly.  Microwave 30 seconds at a time until it is all melted being careful not to burn it.
  4. Pour melted candy coating into the first bowl of cereal and mix evenly to coat.
  5. Pour the candy coated cereal into one of the plastic bags.  Close tightly and shake until the cereal is all coated with the cake mix and powdered sugar mixture.
  6. Pour out onto a nonstick mat or wax paper to set.
  7. Repeat with the red candy coating and the other bowl of cereal.
  8. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
